Tsurugajo—the White Crane Castle of Aizuwakamatsu, the castle town at the center of the Aizu basin—was reconstructed in 1965 after its destruction following the Boshin War of 1868. Saito's Winter in Tsurugajo likely depicts the castle after its reconstruction, the white walls of the keep against a winter sky creating the formal contrast between architectural mass and natural void that drove his most characteristic compositions. The castle of his home region carried personal significance beyond formal interest.
