"Nude in a square" from 1960 confines the female figure within a geometric frame — the square that is both a compositional device and a symbolic constraint, the body's organic curves set against the angular rigidity of the enclosing form. Munakata's nudes were among his most direct engagements with the human body: unidealizing, energetically carved, the figure present in its physical reality rather than aestheticized into an ideal. The square's enclosure heightens the figure's physical presence within a defined space, creating a tension between the body's natural movement and the geometry that contains it.
