$1,000–$15,000. Common landscapes: $1,000–$3,000. Key value factors: Kasamatsu's early shin-hanga works (pre-1955) tend to be more valued than his later sosaku-hanga production.
Awashima (Someijima) is a small island off the coast of Izu where dense island vegetation meets rocky shoreline in dramatic contrast to the blue bay. Kasamatsu captures the character of the Izu coast — a rugged volcanic peninsula that drew landscape artists throughout the twentieth century for its scenery distinct from the gentler Tokaido views. The print conveys the isolated, wild quality of this stretch of the Sagami Sea, where pine-covered islands rise abruptly from calm water.
