$1,000–$15,000. Common landscapes: $1,000–$3,000. Key value factors: Kasamatsu's early shin-hanga works (pre-1955) tend to be more valued than his later sosaku-hanga production.
The enormous red chochin lantern that marks the Kaminarimon gate of Sensoji Temple fills the composition with its brilliant vermillion mass, while the gate's guardian figures and temple precinct recede behind it. Kasamatsu knew this gate intimately from childhood — he grew up in Asakusa and would have passed beneath it countless times. The great lantern is perhaps Tokyo's most recognized symbol, and his print captures its commanding presence as the focal point of a street scene pulsing with urban life.
