Description
A traditional farmhouse or village dwelling at Okutama in the western Tama River valley appears in Kasamatsu's documentary record of rural Japan's disappearing architectural heritage. Okutama, now a recreational area with reservoirs and hiking trails, was in Kasamatsu's era still a remote mountain district where traditional thatched construction persisted. His print captures the heavy thatched roof, the surrounding landscape, and the organic relationship between the dwelling and its terrain that industrial-era construction was beginning to displace.
