Description
The hot spring resort town of Iizaka in Fukushima Prefecture, where the Surikami River flows through a gorge beneath wooden inns and bathhouses, captured Kasamatsu's interest in the architecture and atmosphere of Japan's onsen culture. Iizaka Onsen was favored by the poet Matsuo Basho and retained into the twentieth century the character of a traditional resort where literary and artistic travelers came to rest. The print likely depicts the riverside inn district with steam rising and lanterns reflected in the water.
