Typical Price

Moonlight illuminating the ancient Engaku Temple in Kamakura creates a scene of quiet grandeur. This Watanabe-published nocturnal composition typically sells for $1,200-$3,000 in lifetime editions. The combination of moonlight, temple architecture, and nighttime atmosphere places it among Kasamatsu's most collectible subjects, trailing only the rain scenes in market demand.

Description

The moon rises above Engakuji Temple in Kamakura, its light catching the curving roof of the Sanmon gate and filtering through the tall cryptomeria trees that give the temple its atmosphere of ancient seclusion. Kasamatsu's moon-and-temple compositions find a natural correspondence between the periodic recurrence of the moon and the permanence of religious architecture — both subject to time in different ways, the moon moving constantly while the temple measures centuries. The Engakuji moonrise belongs to his finest nocturnal landscape work.
