$1,000–$15,000. Common landscapes: $1,000–$3,000. Key value factors: Kasamatsu's early shin-hanga works (pre-1955) tend to be more valued than his later sosaku-hanga production.
Description
The hot spring town of Naruko in Miyagi Prefecture — famous for its kokeshi dolls and sulfurous thermal waters — appears nestled in a narrow gorge where steep forested walls amplify both sound and steam. Naruko Onsen was one of the most remote and atmospheric of Japan's mountain resort towns, its dramatic gorge location giving it a character quite different from the lowland spa resorts. Kasamatsu captures the confined, steam-filled atmosphere of the valley where the resort buildings cluster along the river.
