$1,000–$15,000. Common landscapes: $1,000–$3,000. Key value factors: Kasamatsu's early shin-hanga works (pre-1955) tend to be more valued than his later sosaku-hanga production.
The village of Ohara north of Kyoto — famous for its Sanzenin temple and the surrounding maple and beech forest — blazes with autumn color as the deciduous trees at the base of Mount Hiei turn crimson and gold. Kasamatsu visited Ohara as part of his extended travel through Kyoto's environs, finding in this remote mountain village a concentration of autumn foliage unsurpassed in its intensity. The village's low buildings, thatched rooflines, and surrounding forest create a composition of exceptional seasonal richness.
