Description

Suwa Shrine in Nippori sits on the bluff above the Yanaka district in northeastern Tokyo, an old neighborhood Kasamatsu knew from his Asakusa upbringing. The print likely shows the wooden honden, stone torii, or the long approach lined with trees and lanterns, possibly under snow or at dusk given his recurring preference. Kasamatsu's shrine and temple subjects favor low viewpoints that emphasize the architecture's roof lines against sky, with bokashi worked into the upper register to suggest weather or time of day. He produced a number of Tokyo-locale prints throughout his career, treating familiar urban shrines with the same atmospheric attention he gave to remote spa towns. Such designs continue the meisho-e tradition adapted to twentieth-century Tokyo, where Kasamatsu, like Hasui from the same Kiyokata studio, sought subjects that preserved the older feel of the city against rapid modernization.
