Suwa Shrine in the old Nippori neighborhood of Tokyo offered Kasamatsu a subject combining traditional architecture with the residential charm of shitamachi (downtown). Watanabe lifetime editions sell for $800-$2,200. This daytime rendering contrasts with his twilight version of the same shrine, providing a clearer view of the architectural details and surrounding trees.
Description
The Suwa Shrine in the Nippori district of Tokyo — on the hill above the old temple cemetery district that survived the city's various destructions — appears in its wooded shrine precincts, the torii and stone lanterns of the approach visible through trees. Nippori's Suwa Shrine occupied a hilltop that afforded views over much of the city, and Kasamatsu's depiction of it connects to his broader documentation of Tokyo's surviving Shinto sites. The shrine's wooded enclosure preserved an atmosphere of old Edo within the modernizing city.
