Description
The mountain hot spring village of Uzen Akakura in Yamagata Prefecture — where volcanic steam rises beside traditional wooden inns at the foot of Mount Chokai — appears in Kasamatsu's survey of Japan's thermal resort landscapes. Akakura Onsen's position on the flanks of a still-active volcanic system gives it a quality of raw geological presence that distinguishes it from the milder valley spa resorts. Kasamatsu's depiction likely captures the combination of steam, snowcapped peaks, and timber architecture that defines this remote mountain spa.
