Gamman-ga-Fuchi in Nikko is a stretch of the Daiya River where deep pools and volcanic rock formations created an otherworldly landscape of mist, dark water, and ancient stone. The "Fuchi" designation indicated a deep, still pool in a river — places associated with river deities and considered spiritually charged. Shotei renders the gorge with the dark water, wet stone, and overhanging vegetation that gave Gamman-ga-Fuchi its reputation as one of Nikko's most atmospherically intense natural features.
