Shotei's landscapes are his most widely available works. Signed lifetime editions with strong color and condition represent good collector value. Post-earthquake reprints lacking signatures and seals are common and trade at lower prices.
Lake Chuzenji at Nikko — a large lake formed by ancient lava flows damming the Daiya River high in the Nikko mountains — was one of the most fashionable summer retreats for Tokyo's diplomatic community and wealthy residents. Shotei renders the lake at the moment when the surrounding forest, still and deeply green, meets the flat water and the sky above in a composition of unusual spatial depth. The [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) treatment of the sky above the mountain horizon conveys the cool, clear air of the high-altitude lake.
