Shotei's landscapes are his most widely available works. Signed lifetime editions with strong color and condition represent good collector value. Post-earthquake reprints lacking signatures and seals are common and trade at lower prices.
Catalog number M14 shows Mount Fuji in mist with a mountain pass in the foreground — the mountain appearing and disappearing through the mist while the pass gives scale and nearness to the scene. The "Variant" designation suggests this is one of multiple treatments of the same composition, perhaps differing in the density of mist, the position of the pass, or the quality of light filtering through the atmospheric cover. Shotei's mist Fuji compositions approach abstraction more closely than his clear-air versions, the mountain becoming a suggestion rather than a fact.
