Shotei's landscapes are his most widely available works. Signed lifetime editions with strong color and condition represent good collector value. Post-earthquake reprints lacking signatures and seals are common and trade at lower prices.
The Shirakumo Waterfall at Nikko — White Cloud Falls — plunges through the forest along one of the sacred mountain's many streams, the mist of its fall dissolving into the damp air of the ancient cedar woods. Shotei renders the falls with the attention to water movement that he brought to all his waterfall compositions: the changing dynamics of falling water captured in a medium that must freeze motion into a single expressive line or shape. The Japanese title 日光白雲瀧 frames the falls within the classical Nikko landscape tradition.
