This miniature [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) shows a woman in kimono traversing a bridge, a subject linking Shotei's work to the long [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) tradition while filtering it through early twentieth-century sensibilities. Bijin-ga occupies a smaller portion of Shotei's output than his landscapes, and the miniature format here suggests a print intended for the album or souvenir trade rather than wall display. The composition likely places the figure against a simplified setting of bridge railings and water, with attention to the patterning of her kimono and the angle of her parasol or sleeve. Shotei's beauties tend toward quieter, less stylized treatment than late Meiji bijin-ga by Toyohara Chikanobu or Yoshu Chikanobu, anticipating the more naturalistic figure work that Hashiguchi Goyo and Ito Shinsui would develop more fully within [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga). Bridges appear repeatedly across Shotei's catalogue as compositional devices, and combining one with a figure subject allows him to merge [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) topography with the human focus of bijin-ga in a single small sheet.
