Shotei's landscapes are his most widely available works. Signed lifetime editions with strong color and condition represent good collector value. Post-earthquake reprints lacking signatures and seals are common and trade at lower prices.
Snow falls at night — "Yoru no yuki" — and the composition reduces the world to the deepest contrasts: the white of the falling and accumulated snow against the black of the night sky, the dark of buildings and trees against the pale ground. Shotei's [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) treatment of the night sky creates the graduated darkness from which the snow falls, the flakes appearing as light rather than precipitation against the deep nocturnal background. The combination of night and snow was among the most demanding atmospheric subjects in the woodblock print tradition.
