Description
A rural landscape under snow — farmhouses, fields, and trees all covered by a substantial fall that simplified the countryside into a composition of white surfaces and dark tree-lines. Shotei's snow-in-the-country scenes captured the particular quality of snowfall in agricultural Japan, where the elimination of boundaries between field and field path, between garden and lane, created a temporary landscape of unusual visual unity. The bokashi sky above the snow-covered scene suggests the continued possibility of more snow to come.
