Shotei's landscapes are his most widely available works. Signed lifetime editions with strong color and condition represent good collector value. Post-earthquake reprints lacking signatures and seals are common and trade at lower prices.
Snow falls at night and the moon, hazed behind the clouds that produce the snow, casts a diffuse luminosity over the white landscape below. The combination of snow, night, and hazy moon creates one of the most atmospherically complex subjects in the Japanese landscape tradition — the light source indirect, the precipitation reducing visibility, the accumulated snow providing its own secondary luminosity. Shotei's bokashi treatment of the sky, snow clouds, and moon-glow required careful layering to achieve the muted, all-enveloping quality of a snowy night under cloudy moonlight.
