Shotei's figurative subjects are among his rarest and most valuable works. His "Abalone Diver" set the artist's auction record at $62,500 at Christie's New York. Original signed impressions of figure subjects are difficult to find.
A woman stands in a snowscape by a river — perhaps the Sumida or one of its tributaries — her dark kimono vivid against the white accumulation, the river behind her dark and moving while the near bank lies still. The [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) (beautiful woman) tag indicates this is as much a portrait of feminine presence in winter as a landscape view, the woman's contemplative posture suggesting she is absorbed in the experience of winter by the water rather than simply crossing through it. Snow, river, and figure create an image of unusual stillness.
