Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The Guji Gorge at Kurobe — a section of the precipitous Kurobe gorge system in Toyama prefecture — depicted in Henmi's landscape woodblock technique. The Kurobe gorge, carved through some of the most rugged terrain in the Japanese Alps, was one of the dramatic landscape subjects that drew artists seeking the grandeur of alpine scenery. Henmi's rendering of this gorge subject, like his other mountain and gorge compositions, demonstrates his willingness to leave the urban Tokyo subjects of his documentary work for the raw geological drama of the Japanese interior.
