Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The town of Itako, in Ibaraki prefecture, sits at the edge of the Suigo wetland district where rivers and lakes blend into a landscape of extraordinary seasonal drama. In late autumn, the reeds and grasses turn gold and rust, the water reflecting a sky heavy with geese. Henmi's rendering of this late-autumn scene — probably printed in the 1940s from a 1939 design — captures the particular atmosphere of the season in a landscape where nature's rhythms are unusually visible and pronounced.
