Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
Mount Hakkoda, the volcanic mountain group in Aomori prefecture, is depicted — likely in winter or near-winter conditions for which this alpine range was both feared and celebrated. In 1902, a military unit was lost in a catastrophic blizzard on Hakkoda, an event that entered Japanese cultural memory and colored the mountain with associations of extreme winter danger. Henmi's rendering of this mountain brings his landscape attention to a subject with historical as well as scenic resonance.
