Mount Myoko in Niigata prefecture — the volcanic peak celebrated as one of Japan's most beautiful mountains — depicted at dawn, when the first light catches its summit while the valleys below remain in deep shadow. Henmi's dawn mountain subjects combine two of his most frequent interests: the quality of early morning light, with its particular clarity and directionality, and the alpine grandeur of Japan's interior mountain ranges. At dawn, Myoko's volcanic form was most clearly revealed against a sky moving from dark to pale.
