Mount Ontake in the Kiso district of Nagano prefecture — a sacred volcanic mountain that has been a site of Shinto and Buddhist religious practice for centuries — is depicted rising above the Kiso valley landscape. Ontake is one of Japan's holiest mountains, its volcanic summit ringed with shrines and the subject of pilgrimage traditions extending back into the Edo period. Henmi renders the mountain in his characteristic woodblock style, the sacred peak given the same graphic attention he brought to secular landscapes.
