Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The Takagawa River at dawn, printed in 1932 during the Showa period — the early light illuminating the rushing water of the river as the surrounding forest or fields remain in morning shadow. Henmi's river-at-dawn subjects combine two elements he handled with particular mastery: moving water, with its graphic challenges of depicting motion through still means, and early morning light, that quality of illumination that is both clear and tentative, the world not yet fully revealed. The Showa-period date marks this as a work of his most mature phase.
