Village

A rural village rendered in the warm palette of Henmi's color woodblock technique, the cluster of houses and surrounding fields depicted with the affectionate familiarity of someone who has lived near such places. Henmi was born in Wakayama and trained his eye on the landscapes of rural Japan before turning to the urban scenes of Tokyo that would define much of his output. Village subjects allowed him to combine the observed specificity of a particular place with the compositional lyricism of his sosaku-hanga approach.
