Description

The Osaka Tenjin Matsuri — one of Japan's three greatest festivals, held in late July along the Okawa River in Osaka, combining a land procession to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine with a spectacular boat procession of over a hundred vessels on the river — is Tokuriki's subject in this large-format print. The Tenjin Matsuri's boat procession, with the sacred mikoshi transported across the water amid fireworks and the sound of music, creates a scene of extraordinary visual richness. The large format reflects the ambition of the subject: a festival that has been celebrated for over a thousand years.
