Description
Dated to circa 1715, this o-oban tan-e depicts the kabuki actor Fujimura Handayu II in the role of Oiso no Tora, the courtesan-lover of the historical warrior Soga Juro Sukenari. The Soga brothers' revenge story was one of the most popular subjects in kabuki, retold each new year in the genre known as Soga mono ('Soga things'), and Oiso no Tora was a featured female role within this dramatic tradition. Kiyomasu I depicts the onnagata performer in the full elaboration of female stage costume, with hand-applied tan pigment animating the patterned robes and architectural details. The print combines the documentary specificity of role identification with the bold theatrical style that made Torii school prints instantly recognizable as kabuki ephemera. The Art Institute of Chicago holds this print.
