Ishiyama Temple is a celebrated lakeside temple near Lake Biwa, and Toshi Yoshida's rendition captures its distinctive hillside architecture amid verdant foliage. Jizuri editions trade for $600-$1,800, while studio prints are available from $300-$1,000. This subject connects to a centuries-old tradition of depicting Ishiyama-dera in Japanese art, giving it added cultural resonance for collectors.
Ishiyama Temple — the ancient Buddhist complex perched on the rocky shores of Lake Biwa south of Kyoto, where the novelist Murasaki Shikibu is said to have written portions of The Tale of Genji — is depicted here in one of Yoshida's Japanese landscape subjects. The temple's setting, where weathered rock formations meet the lake's edge beneath old trees, gave him a subject combining architectural history with natural drama. The association with Genji added literary depth to a composition already rich in visual interest, and Yoshida captures both the physical beauty and the cultural resonance of the place.
