Typical Price
Tiruchchirappalli depicts the towering Rock Fort temple complex in Tamil Nadu, one of the most dramatic architectural subjects from Toshi Yoshida's Indian travels. Studio editions sell for $400-$1,200, with jizuri impressions commanding $800-$1,800. South Indian temple architecture is a rare subject in Japanese woodblock printing, and this imposing Dravidian landmark stands out in Toshi's international travel catalogue for its sheer verticality and exotic detail.
Description
Tiruchchirappalli — the great temple city in Tamil Nadu, India, known for its towering gopuram gateway towers and the Rockfort complex rising from a massive granite outcrop — gave Yoshida one of his most architecturally spectacular Indian subjects. The city's Ranganathaswamy Temple, with its successive concentric walls and elaborately carved gateway towers, represents one of the largest temple complexes in the world, and the Rock Fort Temple crowning its hill provided an additional dramatic subject. Yoshida's Indian prints capture the subcontinent's overwhelming architectural richness with his characteristic formal attentiveness.
