A print depicting a lady in the Kyoto era (1716–1735) — more precisely the Kyoho era, a period of the Tokugawa shogunate under the pragmatic rule of Shogun Yoshimune, who attempted fiscal reform and the loosening of some of the shogunate's more restrictive cultural regulations. The Kyoho era saw a flourishing of popular culture — the kabuki theater, the pleasure quarters, the publishing industry — that makes its visual culture particularly rich for Chikanobu's historical documentation of feminine dress and bearing.
