Koitsu's atmospheric night and temple scenes are his most sought-after subjects. Doi Hangaten first editions (1930s) are the most desirable; Watanabe editions are more common.
Miidera (formally Onjoji), one of Japan's most ancient and storied Buddhist temples on the western shore of Lake Biwa, holds special significance as the base of the Tendai sect's Jimon branch. At evening, its multi-roofed gate and bell tower cast long shadows across the temple grounds, the lake's surface visible between the great cryptomeria trees. Koitsu renders the gathering dusk with his signature [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) sky treatment, the warm light fading from a scene that has remained largely unchanged for over a millennium.
