This 1877 [triptych](/glossary/triptych) documents the Satsuma Rebellion, the final armed uprising against the Meiji government led by samurai resistant to modernization. As a newspaper illustrator working for the Yubin Hochi Shimbun at the time, Yoshitoshi produced several prints covering the conflict as it unfolded, bringing a journalistic urgency to traditional woodblock composition. The bombardment of Kagoshima by government naval forces marked a decisive turning point, symbolizing the end of the samurai class as a military power.
