This 1890 center panel depicts Ichikawa Danjūrō IX in the iconic role of the warrior-monk Musashibō Benkei in "The Subscription List" (Kanjinchō), one of kabuki's most celebrated plays. Benkei disguises his master Yoshitsune as a humble monk while crossing a heavily guarded checkpoint, delivering an improvised subscription list with such force of personality that the suspicious inspector lets them pass. Yoshitoshi employs gauffrage and metallic pigments to achieve a print of extraordinary technical refinement, matching the theatrical magnificence of Danjūrō's performance.
