

"Picture of the Battle of Shimotoba at Fushimi in Yamashiro Province" (December 1874) depicts one of the opening engagements of the Boshin War (1868–1869), in which imperial forces clashed with the Tokugawa shogunate's army near Kyoto. The battles of Toba-Fushimi effectively ended Tokugawa military power and opened the way for the Meiji Restoration. Yoshitoshi, who lived through this turbulent period, returned repeatedly to the civil war subjects as a mature printmaker, combining journalistic specificity with the compositional traditions of [musha-e](/glossary/musha-e).
