The "Sixth Act" of the Chushingura depicts the ronin Hayano Kampei's suicide after learning that his father-in-law's murder money has been used to purchase a place among the vendetta conspirators—a death founded on mistaken information that gives his sacrifice a peculiarly poignant futility. This act is among the most emotionally devastating in the entire cycle, transforming what could have been a straightforward loyalty narrative into something more complex and tragic. Yoshitoshi's 1860 treatment captures the act's compressed emotional charge.
