"The Summer Battle at Hakone" (circa 1874) is a preparatory drawing depicting a military engagement at the Hakone mountain pass—a strategic gateway between eastern and western Japan that figured in numerous historical conflicts. The summer setting introduces heat and foliage to the mountain pass landscape, creating a different atmospheric register from the winter battle scenes that predominate in Japanese war prints. The preparatory study shows Yoshitoshi working through the compositional challenges of combining mountain landscape with large-scale figure groups.
