Key value factors: For living or recently deceased artists, limited edition size and gallery representation drive value. Signed and numbered prints from smaller editions are most desirable.
This February 1988 print presents Nakamura Kichiemon II in the role of Benkei, the warrior-monk who is among kabuki's most physically demanding and beloved characters. Benkei appears in the play Kanjincho, where he must bluff his way past a barrier guard to protect his lord Yoshitsune — a scene requiring the actor to project both terrifying martial power and desperate emotional vulnerability. Kichiemon II was renowned for bringing psychological subtlety to this traditionally bombastic role. Kokei's woodblock captures both dimensions: the massive silhouette of Benkei's checkered robe and the contained intelligence in the actor's eyes that signals the character's inner struggle.
