Description

The 1954 Before Mountaineering shows the preparation phase—the gearing up, the checking of equipment, perhaps the final conversation at the base of a route—that precedes the actual climb. Azechi was fascinated by this threshold moment when the climber transitions from the ordinary world to the vertical one, the psychological preparation as important as the physical. His bold, simplified figures shown in the before-state carry a charged quality of imminent departure, everything still to come.
