Descending the Mountain is the other half of the climbing experience—the return, often more technically demanding than the ascent, requiring concentration already depleted by hours of upward effort. Azechi's rendering of descent would have shown his figure in the forward-leaning, controlled drop of someone picking their way down difficult terrain, the body's relationship to gravity reversed from the optimistic lean of ascent. In his visual world, the descent carried a different emotional quality than the summit-seeking climb.
