Description
Lake Taisho—Taisho-ike, the pond in Kamikochi formed when a 1915 volcanic eruption dammed the Azusa River, killing a forest of conifers whose standing dead forms remain in the water—was among the most distinctive visual subjects in the Japanese Alps. The bare, bleached trunks rising from the still water, the mountains reflected beyond, created a landscape of melancholy beauty that had drawn artists and photographers since the pond's formation. Azechi's rendering would have given the dead trees and their reflections bold graphic form.
