Description
Mountaineer With Compass—the climber using the navigation instrument that extended human orientation beyond visual range—shows Azechi's figure engaged in the technical practice of route-finding in mountain terrain. The compass as object gives the climber a tool of abstraction: a device that connects the immediate physical environment to a larger spatial framework, translating magnetic north into direction of travel. Azechi's rendering of the compass-consulting figure captures the moment of abstracted attention, the climber briefly withdrawn from physical immediacy into spatial reasoning.
