Description
Sleep on the Mountain (Yama ni nemuru)—the climber at rest in a mountain shelter or open bivouac—depicts the specific vulnerability of sleep in the alpine environment, when the body's defenses are at their lowest and the mountain's demands most immediate. Sleeping in a mountain hut surrounded by wind and weather, or bivouacking under the open sky at altitude, was an experience that connected the climber to the mountain in a different register than the active exertion of the day's climbing.
