Description

Stand on the Snow Gorge shows Azechi's mountaineer in one of the most dramatic positions in his compositional repertoire: the figure standing above a steep snow chute or gully, the gorge falling away below, the climber framed by the vertical walls of the snow-filled cleft. The gorge—a channel carved by water or ice into the mountainside, filled in winter with consolidated avalanche snow—was one of the challenging terrain features that technical alpine routes navigated through or beside.
