Description
Two Mountain Men (二人の山男)—the pair of climbers, roped together or simply traveling in company—shows Azechi's social vision of the mountains as a place of shared human endeavor. Where many of his prints depicted the solitary climber, the paired figures of Two Mountain Men acknowledged the reality that most serious alpinism involved team effort, the two-person rope team a fundamental unit of technical climbing. The relationship between the two simplified forms gave the composition its specific human content.
