Description
The 1954 Village Man—a figure from the mountain village community rather than the climbing world—shows Azechi's attention to the permanent residents of the alpine terrain he visited as a climber. The village man, shaped by agricultural and domestic mountain life rather than the recreational or athletic pursuit of summits, had a different quality of relationship to the mountain than the climber: more integrated, less heroic, the mountain as home rather than challenge. His bold simplified rendering gave this figure equal dignity.
