Description
The 1962 Winter Mountain shows Azechi's alpine landscape in its most dramatically reduced seasonal state—the mountain stripped of its summer complexity, the essential forms revealed by snow's simplifying cover. By 1962 his style had achieved its most fully realized bold simplification, and the winter mountain subject—which had always been the territory where his formal vocabulary felt most natural—received in this decade some of its most definitive expressions. The mountain under snow was for him the mountain in its truest form.
