Hiroshige's images of Edo life—temples, bridges, markets, and seasonal celebrations—are valuable historical documents as well as masterpieces of design. His depictions of the city he loved made him the preeminent chronicler of Edo culture in prints.
Description
Kanda Myojin (also written Kanda Myojiu) was one of Edo's most important Shinto shrines, its festival among the three great matsuri of the city. Hiroshige's print depicts the shrine precinct on the hill above Ochanomizu, likely showing the approach or the festival grounds. The shrine's elevated position gave it commanding views over the lower city districts.
